MALLORY’S SPORADIC STYLE STORIES – PONY TALES

Like every other 7 year old girl in 1997, I had a huge obsession with the Spice Girls. In particular, Baby Spice. I wanted to be just like her- I begged my mom to let me buy size 5 women’s platform shoes (“I’ll grow into them! They’re not THAT big!”), sucked on the official Spice Girls Chupa Chups lollipops (Baby’s brand of choice for her ever-present lollipop) and made my mom style my hair into little pigtails just the way she wore hers. I LOVED pigtails.

As I got older though, I decided they were too juvenile. Wanting to look like a more mature adult (as most teens do), I said goodbye to my favorite childhood hairstyle. I doubted I’d ever wear pigtails in my adult life. But then Prada’s Spring 2010 show happened. I saw the pigtails and I swooned…I immediately went and styled my hair into pigtails once again. I had finally realized my love for grown-up pigtails

Lemon (Sans Poppyseed) Muffins

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

Mix all dry ingredients:

2 Cups All-purpose (we used 1/2 c almond meal, 1 c rice flour, 1/2 c spelt flour)

1 tbs arrowroot

1/2 tsp Xanthan gum

1 tbs. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

Zest from 2 lemons

Juice from 1 lemon mixed in with

1 cup of your choice of milk (Coconut, Almond, Soy, MIMICREME*, etc.)

1/3 c Canola Oil - can be substituted for Apple Sauce (but don’t remove ALL the fat - muffins won’t caramelize)

1/4 cup Sugar (used 1/8 + 2 tbs. Maple Syrup or Agave **you shouldn’t bake with Honey)

1 Teaspoon Lemon Extract (if you don’t have Lemon, can be substituted for Vanilla, but it would be quite as lemony)

1 Tablespoon Poppy Seeds (if desired)

Oil muffin cups or use cupcake liners. Use an oiled measuring cup to spoon out batter into tins.

We sprinkled pine nuts on top, but you can garnish with anything you like, or just leave them plain.

1. * Mimicreme is a new product we recently discovered in our local health food store, made from cashew & almond. We highly recommend it for both cooking & baking!

The Vintage Festival kicked off for me on a beautiful Saturday morning in London. As I ascended the staircase in the Royal Festival Hall, I could here the wild horn section of a full brass band & stopped in awe for a few moments to take it all in. Further into the hall, I was presented with an entire hall full of pincurls, scarlet lips and wiggle dresses hitched up high.... No I wasn't daydreaming. I was at Vintage at Southbank
