There is something unique about Clarence Road in Hackney. For me it’s the mix of architecture and its uses from north to south, and the one horse town feel of the shopping section. The signs are it might be ripe for a ‘gentrifying’ makeover before too long, and Pacific Social Club heralds the start of just that.

Boasting a cute, colourful interior plastered with record sleeves and 50s paraphernalia, Pacific Social Club is a refreshing change from the industrial chic look invading cafes across the nation. They also have great taste in music, Jonathan Richman was crooning away on a recent visit.

Great coffee, fresh juices, imaginative sandwiches - this is a gem of a spot and we must cherish it accordingly.

tips for London escapes...Russell's of Clapton hotel

This lovely, relaxed B&B is perfect for intrepid travellers who want to savour life in a real east London neighbourhood. Each of its five guestrooms is cosy and stylish, but the best part is the home-style comforts - chilling out on the sofa in the living room with a cup of tea, chatting to proprietor Annette about the best local places to discover. Rooms from £65.

On a recent trip to London, though, we found ourselves at Russell’s of Clapton.
A bed and breakfast that also plays host to a lot of traveling bands, including Gang Gang Dance, but doesn’t do it on the low. Instead, it opts for the straightforward route, doing the regular B&B thing, but updating it for people that aren’t really into doilies and old dudes posting up in the common area hogging all the board games.
In addition to the clean, bright, and fresh feeling rooms, the main area features books and magazines we’d actually read like The Gentlewoman (seriously dudes that issue with Adele on the cover is killer) and a collection of Love & Rockets graphic novels. There are also travel books if you’re trying to figure out where to go next ....
Mainly though, the biggest plus was that Russell’s of Clapton cured that weird thing that happens when traveling, where you find yourself sitting on a hotel bed with the exact same floral pattern as the last hotel, wondering how you got here and how it’s possible to feel so out of sorts just because you got on a plane and flew some hours away—and that’s worth so much more than we ever realized.

Minetta Tavern was opened in Greenwich Village in 1937. The Tavern was named after the Minetta Brook, which ran southwest from 23rd Street to the Hudson River.

Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.

one of the BEST stop in NYC: THE SPOTTED PIG

The other day, I was browsing the online menus of several West Village restaurants, trying decide which one to visit for dinner. Their unrelenting sameness depressed me. It’s not that I’ve tired of the classics, only that I doubted they’d be done really well.
Then I decided on The Spotted Pig, and I remembered why the chef, April Bloomfield, really rocks. Her menu—particularly the list of daily specials—is packed with dishes that don’t resemble anyone else’s. She isn’t serving kidneys on toast because there is great demand for them, but because this is her food.

I started with an order of Shito Peppers ($5), lightly fried and dusted with sea salt, each one packing a different heat intensity, depending on how many seeds remained inside. It was just a five-dollar bar snack, but full of flavor, and not duplicated in any other pub I know of.
Then I had a Butter Cup Squash Salad ($15; right) with golden chard and sorrel—a simple, impeccably prepared salad. Who else is serving one with these ingredients?
That’s why April Bloomfield Rocks.
The service here was excellent, as always, bearing in mind that it’s basically a gussied-up pub. But there are a lot of staff here—surely enough for a two-star restaurant, despite the superficially casual box they’re squeezed into.

MALLORY’S SPORADIC STYLE STORIES – PONY TALES

Like every other 7 year old girl in 1997, I had a huge obsession with the Spice Girls. In particular, Baby Spice. I wanted to be just like her- I begged my mom to let me buy size 5 women’s platform shoes (“I’ll grow into them! They’re not THAT big!”), sucked on the official Spice Girls Chupa Chups lollipops (Baby’s brand of choice for her ever-present lollipop) and made my mom style my hair into little pigtails just the way she wore hers. I LOVED pigtails.

As I got older though, I decided they were too juvenile. Wanting to look like a more mature adult (as most teens do), I said goodbye to my favorite childhood hairstyle. I doubted I’d ever wear pigtails in my adult life. But then Prada’s Spring 2010 show happened. I saw the pigtails and I swooned…I immediately went and styled my hair into pigtails once again. I had finally realized my love for grown-up pigtails

Lemon (Sans Poppyseed) Muffins

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

Mix all dry ingredients:

2 Cups All-purpose (we used 1/2 c almond meal, 1 c rice flour, 1/2 c spelt flour)

1 tbs arrowroot

1/2 tsp Xanthan gum

1 tbs. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

Zest from 2 lemons

Juice from 1 lemon mixed in with

1 cup of your choice of milk (Coconut, Almond, Soy, MIMICREME*, etc.)

1/3 c Canola Oil - can be substituted for Apple Sauce (but don’t remove ALL the fat - muffins won’t caramelize)

1/4 cup Sugar (used 1/8 + 2 tbs. Maple Syrup or Agave **you shouldn’t bake with Honey)

1 Teaspoon Lemon Extract (if you don’t have Lemon, can be substituted for Vanilla, but it would be quite as lemony)

1 Tablespoon Poppy Seeds (if desired)

Oil muffin cups or use cupcake liners. Use an oiled measuring cup to spoon out batter into tins.

We sprinkled pine nuts on top, but you can garnish with anything you like, or just leave them plain.

* Mimicreme is a new product we recently discovered in our local health food store, made from cashew & almond. We highly recommend it for both cooking & baking!

** Honey develops toxicity when heated, according Ayurveda.
